While many people think about sunscreen when going to the beach or heading outdoors, it’s also vital to protect your skin as part of your everyday routine. Not only will you keep your skin looking young and healthy, but you can also help reduce the risk of skin cancer. Here are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to sunscreen:

DO’s:

Stick to a sunscreen that has SPF 30 for the most effective protection. Sunscreens with SPF 60 and higher don’t always do a more effective job of blocking harmful rays. It’s important to look for a sunscreen that offers protection against UVA and UVB rays and also has a seal of approval by the Skin Cancer Foundation or the American Academy of Dermatology.

Apply your sunscreen every day. It’s easy to reach for sunscreen on sunny days, but it’s even easier to burn on the cloudiest of days. Since clouds only block 20% of UV rays, it’s important to apply sunscreen when headed out despite the weather. Sunscreen should also be used when spending time driving in the car, as glass windows don’t offer protection against the sun.

Although it’s common to wait until arriving at the beach or outdoor destination, use your sunscreen at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors to allow it to absorb into the skin and offer the best protection.

DON’Ts:

It can be easy to apply sunscreen to the face, arms, and legs, but don’t forget your lips, ears, and even feet. And while spray sunscreens can be applied quickly, you can easily miss spots of your skin. Spray sunscreens can be harmful to breathe in and although the product may be labeled as waterproof, it can still wear off in 30 minutes. You might want to skip this kind of sunscreen and stick to one you apply by hand.

Although sunscreen offers effective protection, don’t forget covering up a bit can help protect you too. Stay safe by sitting in the shade or covering up by wearing sun protective clothing. You can even accessorize with hats and sunglasses that offer UV protection.

Don’t assume sunscreen is just for fair skin. Everyone needs protection from harmful UV rays regardless of your skin type. Preventing sunburns can help reduce your risk of skin cancer, keep your skin looking young and healthy, and prevent future sunspots and unwanted effects of the sun.
