How Physically Intense is Cosmetology School?

Cosmetologists are trained, skilled professionals who specialize in enhancing the beauty of their clients’ skin, hair, and nails. Cosmetologists play an important role in the beauty and wellness industry.

They’re a creative bunch with an eye for aesthetics and a desire to make people look and feel beautiful.

To become a cosmetologist, you need to enroll in cosmetology school to master the skills and techniques needed to earn a certification and work in the field. Health and Style Institute’s Cosmetology Program in Atlanta offers complete training in cosmetology, barbering, skin care, makeup, and salon and spa leadership.

The physical intensity of cosmetology training

Cosmetology school in Atlanta offers a hands-on learning experience that does involve physical activity, but the intensity varies. The physical demands of cosmetology are fairly light compared to many other fields. The main physical challenge is spending a lot of time on your feet. Hair stylists, estheticians, and makeup artists may spend hours on their feet treating their clients, so building up stamina — and choosing comfortable shoes — are important for these professions. Additionally, cosmetology generally involves a lot of repetitive movement of the hands, so it’s important to take steps to prevent conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.

The duration of cosmetology programs

Based on state requirements, cosmetology programs require 9 to 12 months of training. The state of Georgia requires 1500 hours of training followed by certification testing. At Health and Style Institute, future salon professionals will learn the fundamentals during the first 300 hours, which is generally spent in the classroom and includes lectures, demonstrations, and practice on mannequins.

Once you’ve completed the first 300 hours of training, you’ll advance to the next phase, which involves practicing on the school salon’s clients. Upon completing 900 hours, you’ll finish your training in the Creative Phase, where you’ll spend more time working on clients, engaging in class projects, attending advanced lectures, and learning retail, record-keeping, and other business skills.

Cosmetology school coursework

The coursework in cosmetology school is fairly heavy, but it’s not particularly physically demanding beyond standing and using your hands for long periods of time. During cosmetology school in Atlanta, you’ll learn the fundamentals of cutting, coloring, styling, and permanent-waving hair. You’ll learn how to perform manicures and pedicures, facial treatments, and makeup applications. Courses in hygiene and sanitation help you keep your future clients safe, and personal and professional motivation and development will help you further your career. You’ll learn all about the state laws and regulations surrounding salon administration as well as practice writing resumes and cover letters and interviewing for jobs.

Getting a job after cosmetology school

Once you’ve completed all your cosmetology coursework and practical training, you’ll need to take the State Board exam to become a licensed cosmetologist, at which point you will receive your Diploma and be allowed to practice in the state of Georgia. While some salons may require previous work experience, many are happy to hire new graduates fresh out of cosmetology school. Armed with a great resume and the people skills you need to succeed in the field, you can find a job at any number of salons — or open your own.
