If you’re interested in attending the Health and
Style Institute Cosmetology Program, you may be wondering, “what the difference
is between a Cosmetologist and Beautician – aren’t these the same thing?”
The answer might surprise you! There are some major differences between Cosmetologists and Beauticians. Let’s explain the basics now, and help you understand the differences between the two.
Beautician
A Beautician
focuses on hair care and basic skincare treatments. The
term “beautician” typically refers to a person who is skilled in treatments
such as:
- Hair care – hair cutting, coloring, and other basics
- Hair design – styling for special occasions
- Skin care services – facials, waxing and more
Beauticians typically attend a beauty vocational school or college and acquire the necessary certifications and licensure to practice in their state, such as North Carolina or Georgia.
Cosmetologist
Cosmetology typically refers to an individual
with a more well-rounded education, and with a broader range of service
offerings compared to a beautician. Compared to beauticians, Cosmetologists
usually have more extensive training and more expertise in beauty treatments
including – but not limited to – hair, makeup, skincare, nail treatments and
more. A cosmetologist generally receives a well-rounded education that covers all
the basic treatments that may be offered at a salon, spa, or beauty clinic of
any kind – instead of just focusing on one specific area – and offers a broader
range of services compared to a beautician.
All Cosmetologist are Beauticians – but not all Beauticians are Cosmetologists.
Certification Requirements
The terms “beautician” and “cosmetologist”
both mean the same thing in North Carolina and Georgia – and to work as either
a Beautician or Cosmetologist, you must obtain your Cosmetology certification
and license from an accredited school.
In North Carolina and Georgia, individuals must undergo at least 1,500 clock hours of training from a licensed educational institution, such as Health and Style Institute, to become a certified Cosmetologist. In addition, Cosmetologists must pass a written exam to obtain certification after graduation.
