Cosmetology can be a rewarding career with many different career paths, including teaching. As a cosmetology teacher, you could take up teaching full time or remain employed as a cosmetologist while teaching on the side.
You can use your cosmetology income to give you the resources you need to open your own cosmetology training program. A career as a cosmetology teacher can help you live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
A Career in Cosmetology
Cosmetology is indeed a good career. It pays well, with plenty of opportunities for tips. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, a cosmetologist can earn a stable income working either full-time or part-time.
You can work for an established company as an employee, rent space in a salon, take freelance work, and more. You have a lot of different ways you can earn money, and some of them give you a very flexible schedule.
The Benefits of Cosmetology Courses
Cosmetology is also a satisfying career. It allows you to use your creativity, really express yourself, and that’s something that the great majority of careers lack.
Additionally, helping your clients boost their self-confidence by looking their best means that you’re making a real difference in their lives. Teaching future cosmetologists is also satisfying. By providing instruction in cosmetology, you will be helping many other people achieve their dreams, and that can be a very rewarding experience.
The Cosmetology School Experience
Is cosmetology school hard? Ask a dozen cosmetologists this question and you’ll probably get two dozen different answers. It is harder than a lot of people think it will be. There are a lot of different skills you need to acquire, and you need to have some artistic ability at the same time.
You need to do a lot of studying and get a lot of practice at putting your studies to use. However, it’s not as hard as training for a lot of other careers is.
If you commit to putting in the necessary work, it’s entirely doable, and if you have some natural talent at cosmetology, it’ll be even easier. Like a lot of things in life, some people will find it easier and others will find it more challenging.
Altogether, you’ll need at least 1,500 hours of training to complete cosmetology school. If you’re going to school full-time for this, it should take about a year.
If you do an apprenticeship program, it’ll probably take you closer to two years.
Of course, if you intend to go beyond cosmetology itself and get into teaching it, there’s even more training that you need to do. Specifically, another 800 hours of it. That includes 150 hours of classroom instruction and 650 hours of practice teaching sessions.
It’s a fairly long process, but not as long as cosmetology school itself is.
