Fighting Frizz

For folks with curly hair, frizz crops up all the time, and it’s incredibly tough to eliminate. Sometimes it’s caused by heat, sometimes by lack of moisture. Other times, it’s simply a bad hair day. No matter the reason, when frizz shows up there’s no way to ignore it. Nor should you—it can be an indication that your hair is suffering from dryness or damage. Harsh chemicals, excessive processing, and constant heat from blow-drying or straightening can all lead to flyaways, split ends, and broken strands.

With these steps you can take to fight frizz, go ahead — let your glorious mane down!

When Air Drying Your Hair

If you’re air drying your ‘do, avoiding frizz starts right when you step out of the shower.  Use a towel to “blot” your hair, as giving your hair a rub down will leave hair frizzy when dry. If you have serious frizz that you are trying to fight, take a styling cream with plenty of moisture and distribute evenly throughout the hair using a wide tooth comb. Most importantly, don’t touch your hair until it’s totally dry!

When Sleeping

Fight frizz while you sleep with a satin pillow case, which will reduce friction. And don’t make your pony too tight before you go to bed and use a soft hair tie.

When Trimming Your Hair

Split ends can be bad news for avoiding frizzy hair, because the end can split all the way up the strand, causing it to frizz out. Try and get your ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks, and use an oil on the tips to keep them moisturized.

When Blow-Drying Your Hair

When using a blow dryer, use an anti-humidity smoother or cream which will seal the hair cuticle and make sure that your hair can get 100% dry. Also, coat strands with a frizz fighting serum pre-blowout to battle frizz even more. Lastly, make sure to direct the air flow down the hair shaft when drying, and using a ceramic blow dryer will help your frizz-fighting cause.

When Showering

Hair is more frizz-prone if it’s dehydrated, so use a weekly deep-conditioning hair mask moisture treatment in the shower.  Use products with coconut oil, Shea Butter, or Argan Oil for regular shampooing and conditioning.
